Sarah Krasnostein was born in the United States but moved with her parents to Australia. She completed a BA/LLB (honors) degree from the University of Melbourne in 2005. She worked as a lawyer in the Victorian Department of Justice from 2007 to 2011.
She graduated with a Ph.D. from Monash University in 2016. Her thesis, “Pursuing Consistency: The Effect of Different Reforms on Unjustified Disparity in Individualised Sentencing Frameworks”, won her the Mollie Holman Doctoral Medal for L aw.

Krasnostein’s first book, The Trauma Cleaner, was published in 2017. She spent four years researching the book, which is a memoir of Sandra Pankhurst’s life and work as a trauma cleaner. It won both the Victorian Prize for Literature and the Prize for Non-Fiction at the 2018 Victorian Premier’s Literary Awards.
In her second book, The Believer, Krasnostein tells the stories of six people from vastly different backgrounds. It has been shortlisted for the 2021 Nib Literary Award.
