Bernd Schiphorst was born on January 29, 1943 (age 80) in Oldenburg, Germany. He completed his Abitur at the Old High School in Oldenburg, after which he completed an editorial traineeship at the Nordwest-Zeitung in Oldenburg from 1962 to 1964. He played basketball at Oldenburger TB and was temporarily head of the basketball department at the club. He later studied economics, political science and journalism at the Free University of Berlin.
Career
Bernd Schiphorst began his professional career in 1970 as editor-in-chief and member of the management team at the Markte & Medien Publishing House in Hamburg. From 1979, he worked for Bertelsmann AG in leading positions for over 20 years, initially at the Bertelsmann subsidiary Gruner + Jahr, where he was head of the executive office and press spokesman as well as head of the new media department for the chairman of the board.
Schiphorst was significantly involved in the privatization of broadcasting in Germany from 1984. He was chairman of the board of Ufa Film- und Fernsehen-GmbH in Hamburg, under whose umbrella Bertelsmann bundled its TV, film and radio investments. These included, among other things: the television stations RTL, RTL II, VOX and Premiere, the Ufa production companies in Berlin-Babelsberg as well as Antenne Bayern, Radio Hamburg, Klassik Radio and Radio NRW. At the same time, Schiphorst was a member of the Electronic Media Board of Bertelsmann AG.
In 1988 he managed to conclude television contracts with the Bundesliga and the tennis tournament in Wimbledon. In 1993 he briefly took over the management of VOX after the station ran into difficulties. With the advent of the Internet, in 1995 Schiphorst became president and CEO of AOL Europe, a joint venture between America Online and Bertelsmann.
He held the office of President and CEO of Bertelsmann New Media from 1996 and was at the same time a member of the Bertelsmann Multimedia board. From 1990 to 1999 he was a member of the plenary session of the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce and from 1993 was also chairman of the media industry committee.
In 2000, Schiphorst left Bertelsmann and took on the role of media representative for the states of Berlin and Brandenburg. In 2003 he had a brief appearance as a media representative in Berlin’s Tatort: Love and its Price.
From September 2000, Schiphorst was also president of the Bundesliga soccer club Hertha BSC for eight years, and from May 2008 to May 2022 he was its chairman of the supervisory board. From February 2003 to December 2010, Schiphorst was on the board of WMP Eurocom AG.
From July 2004 to July 2006 he was honorary chairman of the Berlin office of the OK FIFA World Cup 2006. He is chairman of the supervisory board of media.net Berlin-Brandenburg and chairman of the board of trustees of the FilmFestival Cottbus. In June 2013, Bernd Schiphorst was elected to the supervisory board of Zeal Network SE.
