Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum was born on December 1, 1958 (age 63 years) in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. He is the son of Emirati parents Saeed bin Maktoum bin Hasher Al Maktoum, and Sheikha Fatima bint Ahmed bin Suliman.
He has four siblings Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Moza bint Saeed Al Maktoum, Khalifa bin Saeed Al Maktoum and Shaikha bint Saeed Al Maktoum. He is a graduate of the University of Denver.

Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum’s career in the aviation industry began in 1985 when he was appointed president of the Dubai Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) (the governing body which oversaw the activities of Dubai International and Dubai Duty-Free). Emirates, the national carrier, was launched at the same time, with Ahmed appointed chairman.
